Volvo describes the principle behind this component clearly on its current loader literature: the cooling fan is hydraulically driven, regulates component temperature, and can be automatically reversed to self-clean the cooling units. On the EC360 to EC480 excavators the fan motor in that system is 14533496, and it is the part that has to survive both the heat and the reversing duty.
Applicability and evidence
Volvo EC330B, EC360, EC380, EC460 and EC480 class excavators, with Volvo’s own parts catalogue recording the item name as Motor. Trade parts data cross-references the unit to a KYB B0440-18002 catalogue number and describes a thirteen-tooth shaft, which is useful for a workshop comparing a substitute; the tooth count should still be verified against the motor you removed, because Volvo changed fan hub arrangements across these generations.

Official Volvo CE specification pages cover the current-generation machines rather than the B and C series these motors fit, so we do not attach published power or flow figures to a specific EC360B or EC460B build on this page. Where a supplier page quotes a kW rating for an EC360B, treat it as an aggregator figure rather than a manufacturer statement, and confirm against your machine’s data plate.
Reversing duty is why these motors fail early
A fan that reverses to clear its cores is a motor whose port roles swap and whose case drain sees conditions a single-direction unit never meets. Two practical consequences for anyone fitting one:
- Port identity matters. Photograph the hose routing before you disconnect anything, and match A and B ports on the replacement rather than assuming colour or position.
- Case drain back-pressure is fatal. Volvo’s own cooling literature is explicit that these fans clean their cores, which means the circuit runs hotter and dirtier than most, and a pinched drain line will finish a new seal in weeks.
Diagnosis order
- Clean the cores and re-measure coolant and hydraulic oil temperature at low and high idle.
- Confirm the fan accelerates when demand rises, and reverses when commanded.
- Measure flow at the motor ports. Short supply points at the fan drive pump, not the motor.
- Check case drain volume with the fan commanded to full; heavy drain flow is internal wear.
