This is the item in our batch where the supplier cross-reference list was most wrong, and the correction changes what you order. 6E-5965 is not an alternative number for 6E-6272. It is the pump that 6E-6272 belongs to. And 9T-4104, printed alongside it in our incoming data, is the D4H pump on a different machine.
What the parts book states
Cat records 6E-6272 as PUMP GP-PISTON with the SLIPPER annotation, from serial 3DR1 and 4BR1, and lists it as part of 6E-5965 PUMP GP-PISTON under the hydraulic system section. The parent 6E-5965 is catalogued as PUMP GROUP-PISTON (HYDRAULIC) on D5M machines from 3CR 00001, powered by the Cat 3116. In other words: if your machine’s book shows 6E-5965, you order the assembly; if it shows 6E-6272, you are buying the pumping section that goes into it.
Applicability
CAT D4H XL from prefix 8PJ 00001 on the Cat 3304 engine, and D5M, D5M LGP, D5M XL and D5M LGP Powershift at 3DR, 3CR, 5ES and 4JS on the 3116. The number 9T-0920 in our incoming data could not be found in Cat’s records at all, and we suspect a transposition of 9T-9020 or 9T-0290. Do not use it.
Assembly or section: which do you need
- Order the section when the housing, shaft and control on your pump are sound and only the rotating group is worn. This is the economical repair and the one most rebuild shops want.
- Order the assembly when the shaft is scored, the housing is worn at the bore, the control has been tampered with, or the machine has been running on contaminated oil. A new rotating group in a worn housing will not hold pressure for long.
- Send photographs either way. The plate number, the shaft end and the mounting face tell us which of the two you are holding, and it takes one minute to check.

Fitting and ordering
Match spline count, barrel length, guide and plate set, and the shim pack against the parts list before assembly. Cleanliness decides the life of the job: target ISO 4406 18/16/13, change the return filter element, and flush the circuit if the old group shed material. Prime before cranking and keep the case drain unrestricted to tank.
