Περιγραφή
Two numbers, one appearance, and a very expensive way to find out that they are not interchangeable. This page is for 524-0924. If you have a 336 GC, the number you need is 524-0925, and no photograph will tell you the difference because the housings look the same.
What Caterpillar’s own data says about this part
Caterpillar lists 524-0924 as Pump Group-Piston, and the parts book item name reads PUMP GP-PISTON, recorded as part of the main hydraulic pump and mounting group on the 340. The remanufactured equivalent is 11R-1435, which Cat describes as a variable displacement piston pump. So the type is settled: a variable displacement axial piston unit.
What is not settled by Caterpillar is the word fan. Their title for this number does not include it, and the parts book places it inside the main pump mounting group. In the trade this unit is sold as the fan pump for these machines, which is consistent with how Cat bolts a small variable pump to the main pump stack on this platform. We are telling you both readings rather than picking one, because if you are matching against a parts book you will see the main pump group heading, and you should not conclude from that that you have been sold the wrong part.
Applicability, read at prefix level
Caterpillar’s own applicability data attaches 524-0924 to the following, and the serial prefix is what matters:
- 336 (not 336 GC): prefixes YBN, JHD, DKS, FEL with the C9.3B, and GDY, SP9 with the C9.3.
- 340: TYH, WDN, GMJ, TMK, SZT, C9.3B.
- 345 GC: KEF, C9.3.
- 349: LKG, RBY, C13.
- 352: MGR, C13, plus the 352 UHD and MH3260 material handler.
Note what is absent. There is no 336 GC entry and no 349 GC entry in Cat’s data for this number. Supplier listings that claim 336 GC are confusing it with 524-0925, and listings that claim 349 GC are not supported by anything we could verify.
How to read a Cat applicability list so this never happens again
Most ordering errors on these pumps come from reading the model name and ignoring the rest of the line. Work the list in this order:
- Find your serial prefix on the machine’s data plate or the VIN-style plate in the cab. It is the first three characters of the machine serial number, not the last five.
- Match the prefix, then the engine. Cat publishes applicability by prefix precisely because the same model badge spans engine changes, and the engine is what determines which pump the cooling circuit carries.
- Check the GC, XE or standard designation. A GC machine is not a parts-identical cheaper version of the standard model. Cat’s own wording is that GC means basic features rather than basic performance, and the parts data proves the point: the 336 GC with its C7.1 gets a different pump number to the 336 with a C9.3.
- Confirm against the number on your own unit. A photograph of the plate settles it faster than any list.
Caterpillar’s own framing on this is worth quoting to your purchasing department: parts are listed as designed to fit based on the manufacturer’s specifications, with a recommendation to consult your Cat dealer before purchasing.
Machine context
The 349 that takes this pump is a next-generation machine with a Cat C13 producing 316 kW (424 hp) net to ISO 9249, an operating weight of about 47,700 kg, main system flow of 779 L/min, equipment pressure of 35,000 kPa with 38,000 kPa in lift mode, and a cooling system holding 52 litre. Cat publishes 52 C high-ambient cooling capability on this platform and lists a hydraulic reverse fan as optional equipment, which is the same architecture this pump feeds.
Diagnosis and fitting
A variable displacement pump in a fan circuit fails in two ways: it loses volume, or it stops responding to the control signal. Test the signal first, because a stuck command looks identical to a worn pump and a replacement will not fix it. Our fan pump diagnosis guide covers flow and delivery pressure, and the regulator article covers the control side.
When fitting: prime the casing with clean oil before cranking, keep the case drain unrestricted to tank, fit a new return filter element, and hold cleanliness around ISO 4406 18/16/13 in line with Bosch Rexroth guidance for axial piston units. Then prove full fan speed under thermal load and log both temperatures.
