The 365C is a machine that generates heat as a by-product of doing what it was built for, and Caterpillar designed its cooling package accordingly. That design is also the reason fan motor orders go wrong on this model, because the way the heat exchangers sit determines what actually fails and when.
What Caterpillar specifies
The 365C L specification describes the arrangement directly:
High capacity, side-by-side cooling system allows operation in ambient temperatures up to 52 degree C (126 degree F). The Electric Power Control (EPC) controls the fan speed based on coolant temperature and hydraulic oil temperature for optimized cooling.

Why side-by-side cooling changes the failure pattern
Side-by-side means the radiator, hydraulic oil cooler and aftercooler sit in a row rather than stacked, which makes them easier to clean and gives better ambient capability. It also means one fan has to pull air through three heat exchangers, and the face area that collects dust is the combined front of all three. In clay, quarry fines or demolition dust, the blockage is gradual and the operator adapts to it, running the machine at higher engine speed to force airflow.
By the time the temperature gauge complains, the fan motor has been running at maximum command for weeks. That is why a 365C that arrives with a failed fan motor nearly always needs the circuit cleaned as well, and why a replacement fitted to a plugged core will fail again. Before anything is ordered:
- Clean the core faces properly, with the pressure washer angled to avoid fin damage, and confirm airflow improves.
- Check the EPC command. If the fan never reaches full speed even with clean cores, the fault is in the control or the pump, not the motor. Our fan pump diagnosis guide covers the test.

Fitment, and the number that gets mixed up
Supplied for CAT 365C, 365C L and 365C L MH with the C15 engine. Trade listings extend 225-4613 to 385B, 385C, 374 and 390D machines, and some of those listings are actually describing 247-8978, which Caterpillar lists as a slipper piston motor for the 385C and 390D with the C18 engine. The two motors are physically different. If your machine is a 374D, the fan pump is 247-8968 and the motor is listed separately, so check the plate before ordering.
Fitting
Flush the circuit if the old unit produced debris, and fit a new return filter element as part of the job. Fill the casing with clean oil before the first crank. Keep the case drain unrestricted to tank. Confirm rotation direction with the fan restrained before the guard goes back. Target cleanliness around ISO 4406 18/16/13, which is the class Bosch Rexroth guidance points to for axial and slipper piston units in mobile service.
