Four numbers circulate around this one part, and the confusion they create is worth clearing up on paper, because buyers order the wrong item from a parts list that calls the rotating group a pump.
The family, item by item
Caterpillar lists 234-4638 and 242-6776 as MOTOR GP-PISTON assemblies, with 10R-8694 as the parallel catalogue reference. Inside those assemblies sits 233-2530, whose item name in the Caterpillar service literature is ROTATING GP-MOTOR -HYDRAULIC FAN, recorded as part of 234-4638 and 242-6776 for machine serial prefix J2F1-UP. So the correct reading is:
- 234-4638 / 10R-8694 / 242-6776 = the complete fan motor assembly you unbolt and replace.
- 233-2530 = the rotating group inside it, which is what a rebuild shop orders instead of a whole motor.
Some online listings translate 233-2530 as a pump. That is a description error, and it comes from machine-generated catalogue text rather than from the parts book. If a supplier offers you a 233-2530 as a fan pump for a 336D, they are selling you the internals of a motor.

One caution on the flow figures. The 336D Series 2 (336D2) is published at 265 L/min per pump and 209 kW to ISO 14396, and it uses a different fan motor set. Do not merge the two generations on a purchase order.
How the D-series fan drive differs from the C-series
On the D generation Caterpillar separated the cooling package from the engine compartment and made fan speed a function of three inputs rather than one. The 345D specification states it plainly: the cooling fan is hydraulically driven with variable speed control based on ambient temperature, coolant temperature and hydraulic oil temperature, which Cat describes as assisting engine power management and improving noise efficiency while providing optimised cooling.
That has a direct consequence for diagnosis on a 330D or 336D. Airflow is now commanded by a controller that reads three sensors and drives a proportional valve on the pump. A motor that is mechanically sound can still sit at low speed because the pump is never being commanded to full displacement. Before you buy a motor, prove that the fan is being asked to run fast. Listed for CAT 330D, 330D FM, 330D L, 330D LN and 330D MH, 336D, 336D L and 336D LN, and by extension the 336D2, 340D L and M330D families with the C9 engine. Serial prefixes decide the fitment on these machines, so send the number from the plate on your old motor together with the machine serial.
