Descripción
Caterpillar’s parts book puts the word fan in this item name twice: PUMP GP-PISTON -HYDRAULIC FAN, sitting inside a group called PUMP & MTG GP-HYDRAULIC FAN. When the manufacturer’s own literature is that explicit, there is no room for the pump-or-motor confusion that runs through most of this catalogue.
What the parts book states
235-2716 is recorded under the steering system section of the 980H literature as PUMP GP-PISTON -HYDRAULIC FAN, part of assembly 235-5333, with older literature also listing the item as PISTON PUMP GROUP-SLIPPER. That last detail tells you the construction: a slipper piston pump, which in Cat’s variable displacement fan pumps is the type that can meter output rather than simply deliver a fixed volume.
Applicability
CAT 980H wheel loader, prefixes MHG, KZL, JMS and PF8 with the Cat C15 engine, and the 980G entries at 2SR and 2KR, which relate to repower and emissions configurations in the same size class. The mating fan motor on these machines is 255-6805, a fixed displacement unit, and the two are a pair rather than alternatives.
The assembly number, and why it is useful
The parts book records this pump as a component of group 235-5333, the fan pump and mounting group. That matters in two practical situations. If your machine has a non-standard bracket, a different hose arrangement or a modified mounting, quoting the group number gets a parts desk to the right hardware faster than quoting the pump alone. And if you are replacing the pump because the old one failed, the group tells you what else is in that assembly that may have been contaminated by the failure, including the mounting, the hoses and the fittings.
One caution on cross-references. Supplier listings pair 209-3258 with this number. We could not confirm that pairing against Caterpillar data, so we do not sell against it. If your old pump carries 209-3258, send the photograph and we will identify what you actually have rather than matching a keyword.
Diagnosis order on a 980H
- Clean the cooling cores and re-measure temperatures at low and high idle. A 980H in quarry or waste handling will block a face in weeks.
- Check oil level, return filter condition and suction strainer. Starvation makes a good pump look worn.
- Measure delivery pressure and flow at the pump with oil at working temperature. The procedure is in our hydraulic fan pump diagnosis guide.
- Confirm the control signal. A variable displacement pump that is never commanded to full stroke behaves exactly like a worn one, and the regulator article covers that test.
- Inspect the fan motor before closing the job. If it shed material, the pump will have swallowed it.
Fitting
Match shaft spline, pilot, flange, port positions and control orientation against the removed pump. Prime the casing with clean oil before cranking. Fit a new return filter element and clear the suction strainer, targeting ISO 4406 18/16/13 for the piston components in the circuit. Keep the case drain unrestricted to tank, since casing back-pressure is the standard cause of a weeping shaft seal. Prove full fan speed under thermal load and log both temperatures.
Terms
Minimum order one piece. New aftermarket units carry a three to six month warranty as stated on your proforma invoice. Bench tested, photographed against your order before the wooden case closes, delivery 5 to 8 working days from payment subject to stock, by sea, air or express courier. The 966H and 972H pump is 254-5147, and the full CAT range is under Caterpillar hydraulic fan motor.
