Some part numbers serve one model. This one has covered four generations of Caterpillar wheel loaders, which tells you both that the cooling duty stayed stable and that a very large number of machines in the field can use it. It also means the fitment list below is long, and worth reading carefully rather than scanning.
What Caterpillar states
161-8919 is listed as a 283.5 mm Long Hydraulic Fan Piston Motor, with the parts book item name MOTOR GP-PISTON. The word fan is in Cat’s own title, so the function is not an inference. The 283.5 mm figure is an overall length, and it is the only dimension Cat publishes for this unit; we have not found a displacement or pressure rating, so we do not quote one.

The prefix detail matters more than the list. A 966H at A6D, A6G or A6J is covered up to and beyond serial 01800, and there are separate prefix entries for the Phase II builds, the military specification builds and the toolcarrier variants. Machine context for the two most common buyers
The 966H is a Cat C11 ACERT machine rated at 262 hp (195 kW) net and 286 hp (213 kW) gross at 1,800 rpm, with an operating weight of about 23,702 kg, a work-tool pump of the piston type delivering 305 L/min and a cooling system holding 39 litre. The 972H moves up to a Cat C13 rated at 287 hp net and 311 hp gross, with an operating weight of roughly 55,451 lb. Both use this motor, and both are common enough in rental and quarry fleets that the part is worth stocking rather than sourcing one at a time.
Why this number survives four generations
A fan motor in a loader is sized by the cooler pack and the fan hub, not by the engine. Cat changed engines across these generations, revised the cooling cores, added electronic control, and kept the same physical interface at the fan. That is normal engineering, and it is good news for a parts buyer, with one caveat: the pump driving the motor, and the control commanding that pump, are not the same across those generations. A 966G and a 966M XE can share this motor and share nothing else in the cooling circuit. Do not extend a fan motor cross-reference into a fan pump cross-reference.
Diagnosis
Loader duty is hostile to cooling components: constant load cycles, high dust, and long idling periods where the engine still makes heat but the vehicle makes no ram air. Before condemning a motor:
- Clean the core faces and re-measure. This resolves a large share of loader heat complaints.
- Confirm the fan reaches full speed at high idle with the hydraulic oil warm.
- Measure flow at the motor ports. Short supply is the fan pump. For the G II loaders that is 191-2942, and for the H series it is 254-5146.
- With correct supply, a slow fan and a heavy case drain is internal wear in this motor. The test sequence is in our hydraulic fan motor diagnosis guide.
- Check the case drain routing on reassembly. Loader service access makes it easy to trap a drain hose against a bracket, and casing back-pressure is what finishes shaft seals.
Fitting and terms
Prime the casing with clean oil before the first crank, fit a new return filter element, and hold cleanliness around ISO 4406 18/16/13 in line with Bosch Rexroth guidance for piston units in mobile service. Minimum order one piece. New aftermarket units carry a three to six month warranty as stated on your proforma invoice. Bench tested, photographed against your order before the wooden case closes, delivery 5 to 8 working days from payment subject to stock, by sea, air or express courier.
