A hauler’s main pump does something an excavator pump never has to: it has to lift a full body while the machine is still moving, then tip, then hold the body up while it is loaded from above. The duty is repetitive, high pressure, and hot, and the pump is the component that decides whether a truck keeps its cycle time.

Why one pump covers four model letters
Volvo sized the D and E series haulers around a common hydraulic architecture, changing engine output, body size and emissions package while keeping the pump train largely intact. That is good for a mixed fleet carrying one part number, and it is a trap for a buyer who assumes the model letters mean nothing. They do mean something: the control settings, the drive coupling and the port arrangement differ between some of these builds, and a pump that fits the mounting may still be the wrong specification.
The reliable order is the number cast on your pump plus the machine serial prefix. Send both and we confirm before invoicing.
How a hauler main pump fails
- Cycle times lengthen and the tip slows, worst when the oil is hot: internal wear.
- Noise at the pump with a foamy tank: cavitation from a restricted suction line or a blocked strainer.
- Body drifts down with the control centred: check the holding valve before condemning the pump.
- Oil at the shaft: case drain back-pressure, commonly created during other repairs.

Match shaft spline, pilot, flange, port positions and control orientation against the removed pump. Prime with clean oil before cranking, change the return filter element, clear the suction strainer, keep the case drain unrestricted to tank, and target ISO 4406 18/16/13. Minimum order one piece.
