The EC950E is a 90 tonne class machine with a Volvo D16 engine rated at 450 kW in Volvo CE’s published specification. That is a great deal of heat to reject through a cooling pack that works in a quarry or a overburden face, and it puts the fan drive at the centre of machine availability rather than at the edge of it.

Why the large-machine fan drive is a different problem
On a 90 tonne excavator the cooling circuit runs near its limit as standard, so there is little margin when one component fades. Three effects compound:
- A fan motor losing volumetric efficiency reduces airflow before the operator sees a temperature alarm, because the system compensates by running the fan harder.
- That compensation raises hydraulic oil temperature, which thins the oil, which increases internal leakage in the motor, which further reduces airflow. It is a self-reinforcing loop, and it is why these machines often get a second fan component replaced within a season.
- The debris from a worn motor goes into a circuit that also feeds the main pumps, so contamination control is not optional at the repair.

Match shaft spline, flange, port positions and drain arrangement against the removed motor. Flush the circuit and change the return filter element. Prime the casing with clean oil before cranking. Keep the case drain unrestricted to tank and target ISO 4406 18/16/13 or better. Prove full fan speed and reverse function under load, then record coolant and hydraulic oil temperature as the new baseline.
