The 336 GC is the machine that proves GC is not just a cheaper badge. It runs a C7.1 where the standard 336 runs a C9.3, and that single difference is enough to give it its own fan drive pump number. Order from the model name alone and you will be told 524-0924 fits. It does not.
What the plate on our unit says
We photograph what we ship. The nameplate on the unit in these images reads P/N 524-0925, model pump piston, made in China. Caterpillar’s own catalogue entry for 524-0925 is PUMP GP-PS-B, and the same PS-B suffix appears on their remanufactured listings described as variable displacement axial piston pumps, which is how we know the type rather than guessing from the housing. Third-party parts indexes record this number specifically as the hydraulic fan pump for the machine.

Caterpillar’s applicability data attaches 524-0925 to the 336 GC excavator with the C7.1 engine, serial prefixes EBJ, JFW, GSF and HFJ, from 00001 upward. Nothing else. It is not listed for the standard 336, not for the 340, and not for the 345 GC, all of which use 524-0924.
Two pumps, one platform: what that tells you about GC machines
Caterpillar’s own answer to what GC means is deliberately blunt: when you see the letters GC on a machine, you are getting the reliability and durability expected from Caterpillar plus low operating costs and simple technology, and a machine without a GC or XE decal is a performance model sitting between the two. What they do not claim, and what nobody should read into it, is parts interchangeability with the standard machine.
The pump numbers are the proof. A 336 GC and a 336 of the same generation share a platform, a cab, an undercarriage and a bucket range, and still differ in the cooling drive pump because the engine and its thermal management package are different. Cat’s marketing talks about one common platform across the next generation of excavators; their parts data talks about separate numbers. Both are true, and for a parts buyer the second one is the sentence that matters.

Caterpillar’s 336 GC literature gives an operating weight of 33,900 kg, net power of 194 kW (259 hp) from the C7.1 ACERT with no aftertreatment, a hydraulic tank capacity of 373 litre, a fuel tank of 600 litre, a maximum swing torque of 137 kN·m and an altitude capability of 2,300 m without de-rating. We could not find a first-party figure for this machine’s fan circuit pressure or flow, so we do not publish one.
Why a variable displacement fan pump is worth diagnosing properly
On a machine with no aftertreatment, the cooling package carries more of the thermal load, and the fan pump is the component that decides whether airflow matches demand. Two failure modes dominate. Internal wear reduces delivered volume, so the fan stops reaching speed under load while everything else on the machine works normally. Or the control stops responding, and the pump sits at part displacement regardless of what the controller asks for. The second one is the fault that gets a good pump returned.

Match shaft spline, pilot diameter, mounting flange, port positions and control orientation against the removed pump. Prime the casing with clean oil before cranking. Fit a new return filter element and clear the suction strainer. Keep the case drain unrestricted to tank, since casing back-pressure is what finishes shaft seals. Hold cleanliness around ISO 4406 18/16/13, the class Bosch Rexroth guidance gives for axial piston units. Then prove full fan speed under thermal load before the guard goes back on.
