Two things follow for anyone buying spare parts for these machines: the fan is on the suction side of the coolers rather than the pressure side, and the fan reverses. Both change how failures present and how a replacement should be proven.

Why a reversing duty changes the failure pattern
A fan that reverses periodically is a motor that sees its case drain arrangement and its port pressures swap. That is normal for a bi-directional unit and abnormal for a single-rotation one, and it is the reason a substituted motor that bolts up and runs forwards can still fail early in this position. When you check a used or aftermarket unit for this application, confirm it is specified for bi-directional duty and that the drain arrangement matches the machine.
Caterpillar describes the same duty on its current large excavators as a high-efficiency hydraulic fan with a programmable automatic reverse function to keep cores free from debris without operator interaction. The benefit only exists if the fan actually reaches full speed in both directions, which is what you are proving when you test this motor.
How to test before ordering
- Read the monitor first. The F-series controller will usually have logged a fan circuit fault or a high hydraulic oil temperature event. That record changes where you start.
- Command reverse manually. If the fan runs forwards strongly but will not reverse, the fault is in the shift command or valve, not in the motor.

- Inspect the cores. Side-by-side coolers with easy-clean cores still plug in clay and blast dust. Airflow restored by cleaning is airflow you did not need a new motor for.

Photograph the hose routing before removal, since port identity matters on a bi-directional unit. Match shaft form, flange and port thread against the old motor. Fit a new return filter element, prime the casing, keep the case drain unrestricted to tank, and target cleanliness around ISO 4406 18/16/13 in line with Bosch Rexroth guidance for axial and slipper piston units. Then prove forward speed, reverse function and both temperature readings at low and high idle.
