Cat’s description of this part leaves nothing to interpret: a vibratory piston motor generates vibration using piston-driven motion to support compacting performance. It spins the eccentric weight in the drum, and it is the reason a roller achieves density. Our incoming parts sheet labelled it as a fan motor for rollers, which is wrong, and the correction is stated on the page rather than left for a buyer to discover on the bench.
Toepasbaarheid
Caterpillar compactors covered by the catalogue data include CP-54, CP-56, CS-54, CS-56, CS-531C and D, CS-533C, D and E, CP-533C, D and E, and CS-563 and CP-563 C, D and E. Engine fitment varies by generation: the -56 platform uses the Cat C6.6, the CS-54 and CP-54 the C4.4, the 533E and 563E the 3054C and 3056E respectively, and the earlier C and D models the 3116 family. Machine serial prefixes decide the fitment, so send them.
Why this is not a fan motor
The two parts look similar, are both axial piston units, and both are bolted to a cast housing with a splined or tapered shaft. The difference is duty. A vibratory motor runs at high speed against a continuously reversing centrifugal load, and it is fed by a dedicated vibration pump with its own pressure and frequency control. A fan motor runs against an aerodynamic load that changes slowly with temperature. Swap one for the other and the machine will run for a short time before the seal, the bearing or the control response gives up. Some aftermarket tables do list this number as a fan motor, and we do not follow them.
Diagnosis on a roller that will not vibrate
- No vibration but the drum turns: check the vibration pump output pressure and the solenoid or control valve before condemning the motor.
- Weak amplitude at low frequency: worn motor internals or a slipping bearing. Measure motor case drain against specification.
- Oil leaking at the drum-side seal: usually a drum bearing problem that has been running for a while and has put side-load into the motor shaft.
- Noise and heat: contamination. The drum bearing seals on these machines pass fines into the oil, and the vibratory motor is the component that pays for it.

Montage
Match shaft spline, flange, bolt pattern, port positions and case drain arrangement against the removed motor. Flush the circuit and change the filter element, because vibratory motors generate the debris that kills the next unit. Fill the casing with clean oil before the first start, keep the case drain unrestricted to tank, and run the machine up to frequency without load before the drum is put to work. Target ISO 4406 18/16/13 cleanliness for the piston components in the vibration circuit.
