On a 90 tonne excavator there are several variable displacement piston pumps in the hydraulic stack, and they look similar from a distance. This one drives the cooling fan. It is smaller than the main pumps, it is cheaper than the main pumps, and it is regularly mis-sold as one of them because a supplier title said so.
What this pump is
Dealer parts data describes 14676708 as a fan or cooling drive pump for the EC950 and EC950E, built on a K5V80-class variable displacement axial piston platform. Volvo’s own online catalogue does not return a citable page for the number, so the type and the size class are dealer-established rather than manufacturer-confirmed.
What we can state clearly is the distinction that matters. The EC950 main hydraulic pump is a much larger K3V280-class unit carrying a different part number and a price several times higher. If a quotation offers you 14676708 as the main pump, or offers a K3V280 as the fan pump, one of them is wrong, and it is usually the quotation.
Why a cooling pump on a 90 tonne machine is a wear item
- The engine is rated at 450 kW from Volvo’s D16 in the manufacturer’s published EC950E specification. Most of that energy eventually leaves the machine as heat, and a large share of it leaves through the cooling pack.
- The pump spends long periods at or near maximum displacement, because a quarry machine rarely has idle time in a cool ambient.
- Its output feeds a fan motor that also reverses, so the circuit sees direction changes and drain conditions that a single-direction system never meets.
Diagnosis order
- Clean the cores and re-measure coolant and hydraulic oil temperature at low and high idle under load.
- Confirm the fan accelerates when demand rises and reverses when commanded.
- Measure flow and pressure at the pump outlet at working temperature.

Match shaft spline, pilot, flange, port positions, control orientation and rotation against the removed pump. Prime the casing with clean oil before cranking, keep the case drain unrestricted to tank, and target ISO 4406 18/16/13. Minimum order one piece.
