Two numbers circulate for the same position on the large Volvo excavators, and a supplier who knows which one your machine carries is worth more than a supplier with a bigger warehouse. Here is how the pair sits.
Applicability and evidence
Volvo EC700 and EC950 class excavators, described in dealer parts data as a hydraulic fan gear pump with a displacement of roughly 66 ml per revolution, listed alongside 14543168 for the same application. Volvo’s own online catalogue does not return a citable page for 14778109, so both the figure and the machine list are dealer-established rather than manufacturer-confirmed. Treat the 66 ml as a reference point to check your old pump against, not as a specification to order on.
Why companion numbers matter on a large machine
On a 70 to 90 tonne excavator the cooling pack is sized to reject most of the engine output, and the fan drive is often split across more than one pump line depending on configuration, emission package and market. Two catalogue numbers for one position usually means one of three things: a supersession, a build-specification split, or a supplier copying the wrong row. Only the first two are legitimate, and only your serial prefix tells them apart. That is why we ask for the plate photograph before quoting rather than after.
Diagnosis order
- Clean the cores and re-measure coolant and hydraulic oil temperature at low and high idle under load.
- Confirm the fan reaches full speed on a loaded cycle, not just at idle in the yard.
- Measure pump outlet flow and pressure at working temperature; gear pump wear shows as output that fades with heat.
- Check the suction line, strainer and oil level before condemning the pump.
- Inspect the fan motor case drain, since a motor that has shed material has already passed it into this pump.

Montage
Match shaft form, pilot, flange, port positions and rotation direction against the removed pump; gear pumps are direction-sensitive. Prime with clean oil before cranking, change the return filter element, keep the case drain unrestricted to tank, and target ISO 4406 18/16/13.
