Some part numbers arrive with two conflicting descriptions, and the honest answer is that we do not know which is right. This page carries that answer rather than picking the more marketable one, because the difference decides what the part is for and a buyer deserves to know before ordering.
The conflict, stated plainly
- Our source record grouped 14602252 with the fan drive pumps for the EC380 and EC480.
- Chinese dealer listings describe the same number as a pilot pump for the EC340D, EC380D and EC480D.
- Volvo’s own online parts catalogue does not return a citable page for the number, so neither claim can be confirmed from the manufacturer.
A fan drive pump and a pilot pump are not interchangeable parts. One supplies oil to the cooling fan motor; the other supplies the low-pressure control circuit that actuates the main pumps’ regulator. Fitting the wrong understanding of this part into a diagnosis is how a workshop spends a day and still has a hot machine or a sluggish one.
How to confirm which circuit yours serves
- Photograph the port block. A pilot pump is small with two ports and a drain; a fan pump is larger and usually has a control or orifice block on the body.
- Trace the hoses. Follow the delivery line: to the fan motor at the radiator, or to the pilot manifold near the main pumps.
- Read the number cast on your housing including any suffix, and note the machine serial prefix.
- Send all three to us. We will confirm against the parts record for your build and tell you which circuit this item serves on your machine before you pay.
Diagnosis notes for both possibilities
If it is a pilot pump, the symptoms are sluggish or unresponsive controls with normal engine power, and the test is pilot pressure at the regulator port. Fitting
Match shaft form, pilot, flange, port positions and rotation against the removed pump. Prime with clean oil before cranking, change the return filter element, clear the suction strainer, keep the case drain unrestricted to tank, and target ISO 4406 18/16/13.
