Description
The E to F transition in Volvo’s mid-size haulers is where a lot of pump orders go wrong, because the model letter changed and the hydraulic architecture changed with it, but the pump housing did not. A part that fits is not the same as a part that performs.

Volvo A35E, A35F, A40E and A40F articulated haulers, described in dealer parts data as a main hydraulic pump. Volvo’s own online catalogue does not return a citable page for 15020161, so the machine list is dealer-established rather than manufacturer-confirmed. No displacement, pressure or flow figure is published for the number, and none is quoted here.
What changed from E to F
Volvo revised engine emissions packages, hydraulic pressure settings and the way flow is prioritised between hoist, steering and travel across that boundary. The pump family carried over physically, which is why dealer lists show one number spanning both letters, but the control specification did not always carry over with it. Ordering on the model letter alone is how a workshop ends up with a pump that bolts on and tips the body slowly.
What settles it is the number cast on your pump plus the machine serial prefix. Send both and we confirm against the parts record for your build before invoicing.
Diagnosis before you buy
- Judge the pump hot. Tip and hoist times lengthen as the oil thins, and a cold test hides it.
- Compare against a known-good machine of the same model rather than against a book figure you cannot verify.
- Check relief settings and the body holding valve before condemning the pump; drift is a valve symptom far more often than a pump symptom.
- Oil at the shaft means case drain back-pressure, not necessarily a bad seal.

Montage
Match shaft spline, pilot diameter, flange, port positions and the control or compensator arrangement against the removed pump. Prime with clean oil before cranking, change the return filter element, clear the suction strainer, keep the case drain unrestricted to tank, and target ISO 4406 18/16/13 for the piston components in the circuit.
